Clawson’s 1905 Restaurant & Pub specializes in serving the freshest seafood, meats and produce they can get their hands on and pouring the largest variety of North Carolina beers in town. Everything on their menu is made to order. Whether for lunch or dinner, Clawson’s shrimp and grits is extraordinary and worth a trip to Beaufort. Even their ridiculously tasty ranch dressing is mixed up right on the premises. In addition to their daily menu, Clawson’s offers several blackboard features.
Lunch favorites include a long list of sandwiches, Angus burgers and salads. Appetizers include their famous Buffalo shrimp or chicken wings, crab dip and more. Dinner always offers fresh seafood features, zesty ribs, steaks, chicken, burgers and sandwiches. In the Pub, choose from one of their eight different beers on draft or their sizable bottled beer collection. Clawson’s specializes in North Carolina–crafted brews, and features one NC brewery each month.
The Loft at Clawson’s is ideal for small intimate groups.
Clawson’s first location was on the south (water) side of Front Street where all the retail shops were able to serve customers that arrived by boat from Harkers Island and points east. The original waterside grocery store was destroyed by a hurricane, so the current Clawson’s was re-established on the north side of Front Street where it is today.
In 1985, Fred and Joyce McCune purchased Clawson’s and the neighboring building which housed the Fishtowne Alley shops in the old P. H. Rose 5 and Dime store. In 1989, Joey McClure, of Harkers Island, became a partner and general manager of the restaurant.
The current owners have tried to emphasize and preserve the history of the building by displaying memorabilia from the grocery store and Beaufort’s past. Pictures of the building as a grocery store from the 1920’s line the stairwell, along with copies of The Beaufort News.
